The athlete of the year has to demonstrate heart, motivation, and championship determination. This individual must stand out amongst all others and most importantly win. In 2011 many athletes from various sports displayed such characteristics. Although no athlete showcases and dominates his or her sport like the 2011 iffanscouldtalk.com athlete of the year, Usain Bolt.
By Bolt’s lofty standards; 2011 was an average year. Bolt’s achievements included two world titles in the 200 meters and the 4×100 meter relay, and posting the year’s fastest times in both the 100 and 200 meters. Such accomplishments within the period of a single year are outstanding for any other athlete. To Usain Bolt, “The World’s Fastest Man” they’re average. Anything short of another world record is the “been there done that” territory for Bolt. After all the man has three world records in the 100 meters 9.58, 200 meters 19.19, and ran the anchor leg in the 4×100 world record Jamaican relay team 37.04.
Aside from a controversial false start in the 2011 100 meter world championships (where his Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake won) Bolt’s championship pedigree is nearly unblemished. The bigger the stage; the more routine it has become for Bolt to amaze his audiences. When the bright lights are on Bolt, seems to always shine the brightest.
Bolt has simply dominated the sport of track and field since the2008 Beijing Olympics. Since 2008, he’s become a household name and a worldwide icon for his abilities on the track. Off the track Bolt is admired for his charismatic and fun personality. He’s often seen in front of the cameras dancing and entertaining spectators.
For his accomplishments on and off the track; Bolt has become arguably the most popular athlete in the world today. His remarkable achievements have sparked the sport of track and field, and have captivated the world. This is why he is the 2011 iffanscouldtalk.com athlete of the year.
Next up for the Jamaican track and field superstar are the 2012 Olympic Games in London where Bolt looks to defend his titles in the 100, 200, and 4×100 meter relay. He has also flirted with the idea of running the 4×400 relay for Jamaica. Whatever Bolt does it can be assured that the world will be watching the world’s fastest man.
